Nokia N95 Review - A Review of the Nokia N95 Cellular Phone by Jonathan Baker

The Nokia N95 has been superceded by a newer model, however it has most of the functionality of the newer N95 8GB and may be an excellent buy if a person does not need the features of the newer smartphone.

The Nokia N95 contains the same array of multimedia features of the newer model beginning with the QVGA 240 by 320 pixel color display that utilizes an ambient light detector and presents up to 16 million colors. The 5 mega pixel camera and the integrated GPS mapping functions use the big colorful display to great advantage.

The camera employs Carl Zeiss optics, auto focus, 20X digital zoom and an integrated flash. Automatic exposure helps assure great pictures and red-eye reduction is automatic.

The MP3 digital music player incorporates play lists, and an equalizer. Both the MP3 player and the FM radio present very good sound for a device this size: only 2.1 inches high, 0.8 inches deep, and 3.9 inches high. And it weighs only 4.2 ounces.

GPS mapping functions are clear and colorful on the large screen and maps are included for over 100 countries. Restaurants, hotels and other points of interest are included as standard functions and voice guided navigation and city guides can be purchased separately.

An interesting feature is the dual slide function which makes switching between different modes easy. A numeric keypad slides out from the bottom of the smartphone while dedicated media keys slide out from the top. When the media keys are exposed the display automatically switches to landscape mode.

The N95 is a phone, of course, and phone functionality is complete including functions such as vibrate alert, voice dial, voice recorder, speed dial, and speakerphone. Internet browsing is supported and allows zooming out to a full screen view of a page, selection of an area, and then zooming in to the desired detail. Text automatically adjusts to the screen size.

The smartphone operates on WCDMA 850/1900 (HSDPA), and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900/1800/1900 MHz. Connectivity is supported via IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, Infrared (IrDA), and Bluetooth wireless interfaces. Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) provides easy interaction with personal computers and the Symbian OS 9.2/Series 60 3.1 Edition operating system supports optional applications.

Although the newer Nokia N95 8GB offers more internal memory which can increase speed and enable operation of additional software applications, people not needing such features should consider the Nokia N95.

The large 4.13 inch by 2.47 inch WVGA touch screen displays high quality images on its 800 by 480 pixel, 65,000 color screen. The transflexive screen with its ambient light sensor provides clear pictures in bright daylight and dim conditions. The N810's 2.83 inch height, 5.04 inch width, 0.55 inch thickness and 7.97 ounce weight is small for a device with such a large screen, hardware QWERTY keyboard, integrated web camera, and GPS navigation. A hardware key enables quick locking of the touch screen and keys.

The 2 gigabyte integrated memory can be augmented with up to 8 gigabytes with a miniSD or microSD card. The Texas Instruments OMAP 2420, 400 MHz processor and Maemo, Linux based, OS2008 operating system deliver plenty of power for the N810's functions, the included applications, and optional computer applications that can be added. In fact, with the physical slide-out keyboard, large screen, and optional 10 Gigabytes of memory, the device is a very capable computer.

A full function WEB 2.0 Mozilla based browser is standard and includes AJAX functionality to support interactive web applications.

Integrated GPS navigation is standard and voice guided navigation is optional. Preloaded maps, dependent on the geographic area of purchase, are included.

MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, AMR, AWB, M4A, Real Audio, and PP2 audio formats are supported. Play lists can be constructed and over 7,000 songs can be stored with the optional 10 gigabyte storage card. A sensitive integrated microphone and integrated stereo speakers are standard. Optional Bluetooth headphones and an FM transmitter for playing music through a car radio are also available.

Network connection is via WiFi WLAN IEEE 802.11b/g hotspot or through a Bluetooth v2.0 +EDR connected mobile phone, and Skype internet phone service is a supported option. Access to shared media and other Personal Computer functions is supported via a Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) USB connection.

Although battery life is dependent on many variables, music play up to 10 hours, standby on-line time of 5 days, and 14 days standby time averages can be expected.

The Nokia N810 capably provides GPS navigation, impressive music, internet, and computer functions in a small, easy to use package.
